Scope of our HLF Bid

St Mary's HLF Bid

The scope of our HLF work is limited to the eradicating the dry rot form the building, the renewal of the electrics and lighting. Also to provide the necessary means of sharing this heritage with the wider community and historical bodies of interest. And the preserve this for future generations.

Reason for our Hlf bid ...

  • Dry rot appeared in church September 2015
  • The church building electrics do not now comply with current standards
  • The church has the oldest laminated roof in the diocese – this is a unique feature
  • In order to address the dry rot and electrics and to future proof the church it was necessary to apply for a grant from the Heritage Lottery funding
  • the HLF process is
  • If the initial bid is successful, a start-up grant is awarded
  • the church works through a development phase, preparing a plan for the future
  • The 2nd submission needs to be made within a set deadline.
  • At the same time the church needs to look for other funding streams and applications have been made to (should hear if successful by end of February)
    • National Churches Trust (Listed buildings only)
    • All Churches (Ecclesiastical)
    • Listed Place of Worship Grant Scheme to claim back VAT.

The Physical building works ...

  • The services of a Quantity Surveyor and Architect have been obtained.
  • The accepted tenderer is Burleigh Stone in Bootle. Hopefully work will commence in June 2017 and should take approx. 26 weeks. Until work commences we do not know how deep the dry rot is.
  • The faculty petition for permission to undertake the work is now with the Bishop’s Registrar.
  • The church hopes to have enough money to improve the lighting inside and outside the church
  • As part of the work the gutters will be stonewalled i.e. made so that water cannot get into the church
  • The church needs to demonstrate to HLF that it has a maintenance plan in place to look after the building.
